What the paper looks like

LeseverstehenTeil 2

This is Teil 2, just like on exam day. You read one text and answer five questions about it, each with ‘a’, ‘b’ or ‘c’.

The method

  1. 1Read the question first

  2. 2Find the part of the text the question is about

  3. 3Check every word of the answer against the text

Let's do question 6 together

1Read the question first

6  Das neue Schwimmbad …

Question 6 is about the new pool, so that is what you look for in the text.

2Find the part of the text the question is about

The first sentence is about the new pool. The answer to question 6 has to be in that sentence.

3Check every word of the answer against the text

Every word of ‘b’ matches the text, so you mark ‘b’ for question 6.

An answer can sound true and still be wrong. Only pick an answer when you can point to the sentence in the text that says it.

Your turn: question 7

Not quite. Find the sentence about children under six. What does it say about them?

The answer is ‘a’. The text says children under six pay nothing. Answer ‘a’, bezahlen keinen Eintritt, means ‘pay no entry fee’, and that matches the text. Answer ‘b’ sounds true for small children, but the text never says it.

The answer and the explanation are shown above.

Answers that only sound true

Each question has two wrong answers. In Teil 2 they often look like one of these three.

  1. True in real life, but not in the text

dürfen nicht allein schwimmen means ‘may not swim alone’. That sounds right for small children, but the text never says it.

  2. The text says the opposite

steht schon seit einem Jahr means ‘has been there for a year’. But the text says the pool wird im Herbst eröffnet, so it opens in autumn.

  3. Words from the text in the wrong place

Question 8 asks about Monday, and one answer says ist der Eintritt frei, ‘entry is free’. Entry is free only for children under six, and on Mondays the pool is closed.

When two answers both look possible, check each one for these three traps. The answer that passes all three checks is the right one.
