What the paper looks like

SprachbausteineTeil 2

Lesen Sie den Text und wählen Sie für die Lücken 31 bis 40 das passende Wort aus der Liste. Jedes Wort passt nur einmal.

This is Sprachbausteine Teil 2, just like on exam day. You read a text with gaps, and for each gap you pick one word from the list under it. Every word fits only one gap.

The method

  1. 1Read the sentence before and after the gap

  2. 2Decide what kind of word is missing

  3. 3Cross out the words you used

Let's do gap 31 together

1Read the sentence before and after the gap

Ein Wochenende in Hamburg

Am Samstag sind wir früh ___ (31) Hamburg gefahren.

The words after gap 31 are „Hamburg gefahren“, which means ‘went to Hamburg’. The missing word has to go with them.

2Decide what kind of word is missing

  • a word for a place✓
  • a word for a time✕
  • a word for a reason✕

„Früh“ already says the time, and it means ‘early’. „Hamburg“ is a city, so gap 31 needs a word for a place.

3Cross out the words you used

nach Hamburg gefahren

German says „nach Hamburg gefahren“, which means ‘went to Hamburg’. So you write ‘c’ in box 31 and cross out „nach“ in the list. You used it, and no word fits twice.

Cross out each word right after you use it. The list gets shorter, and the last gaps become much easier.

Your turn: gap 31 in a new text

Mein Weg zur Arbeit

Ich wohne drei Kilometer vom Büro entfernt. Meistens fahre ich ___ (31) dem Rad.

31  Meistens fahre ich ___ dem Rad.

Not quite. Which small word fits before „dem Rad“ when you say how you travel?

The answer is ‘c’. A small word for how you travel is missing: „mit dem Rad“. „Deshalb“ means ‘that is why’ and „trotzdem“ means ‘anyway’, so neither one tells you how you travel.

The answer and the explanation are shown above.

Three traps in the list

Wrong words in Teil 2 often hide behind one of these three traps.

  1. A word you already used

„Deshalb“ also looks good for gap 33. But you used it for gap 32, and each word fits only once, so gap 33 needs „und“.

  2. A small word that stands for a place

In „Wir möchten ___ bald wieder besuchen“, „sie“ stands for „Hamburg“. It means ‘it’ here. „Ihr“ means ‘you’ or ‘her’, so it does not stand for the city.

  3. A reason word where the result belongs

In gap 32, „weil“ means ‘because’ and begins a reason. But „haben wir einen Spaziergang gemacht“ is the result of the nice weather, so you need „deshalb“, which means ‘that is why’.

When two words both look possible, check them against these three traps. The word that passes all three is the right one.
