What the paper looks like

LeseverstehenTeil 3

Welche Anzeige passt zu welcher Situation? Wenn keine Anzeige passt, schreiben Sie x.

This is Teil 3, just like on exam day. Each person is looking for something, and you write the letter of the ad that fits them, or ‘x’ when no ad does.

The method

  1. 1List what the person needs

  2. 2Check every need against each ad

  3. 3Write the letter of the ad, or ‘x’ if no ad fits

Let's do Tom together

1List what the person needs

Person 11

Tom möchte abends kochen lernen. Tagsüber arbeitet er.

Tom needs two things: a cooking course, and a time in the evening, because he works during the day.

2Check every need against each ad

Ad ‘a’

Deutschkurs für Anfänger. Montag und Mittwoch, 18 bis 20 Uhr.

Ad ‘b’

Kochkurs für Berufstätige. Jeden Dienstag um 19 Uhr in der Stadtmitte.

Ad ‘a’ is a German course, so one need is missing and the ad is out. Ad ‘b’ is a cooking course at 7 in the evening, so both needs fit.

3Write the letter of the ad, or ‘x’ if no ad fits

  • a Deutschkurs für Anfänger.✕
  • b Kochkurs für Berufstätige.✓
  • c Fahrradtour am Samstag.✕
  • d Tanzkurs für Paare.✕

Only ad ‘b’ has both things Tom needs, so you write ‘b’ in box 11.

An ad can look close to what the person wants and still be wrong. When even one need is missing from the ad, cross it out and check the next one.

Your turn: Herr Behnke

Person 12

Herr Behnke ist 40 Jahre alt und möchte ein Instrument lernen. Er hat nur mittwochs am Nachmittag Zeit.

The ads

a Strickabend im Café Wollknäuel. Dienstag, 19 bis 21 Uhr.

b Brotbackkurs für Anfänger. Samstag, 8.30 bis 12.30 Uhr.

c Mundharmonika für Kinder. Mittwoch, 15 bis 16 Uhr.

d Rechtsberatung für Mieter. Donnerstag, 16 bis 18 Uhr.

Which ad fits Herr Behnke?

Not quite. Herr Behnke is 40, wants to learn an instrument and is free on Wednesday afternoon. Does the ad you picked fit all three?

The answer is ‘x’. Ad ‘c’ is a harmonica course on Wednesday afternoon, so it looks right. But it is für Kinder, ‘for children’, and Herr Behnke is 40. One need is missing from ad ‘c’, and no other ad teaches an instrument, so you write ‘x’.

The answer and the explanation are shown above.

When to write ‘x’

There are more ads than people, so some ads are never used. Some people get no ad at all, like Herr Behnke in box 12. Ad ‘c’ looked close, but it is für Kinder, ‘for children’. When even one thing a person needs is missing from every ad, you write ‘x’.
