telc B1 Hören Teil 1: listen for what the recording is about
- 5short recordings
- 5sentences to tick, one for each recording
- 1×you hear each recording once
What the paper looks like
HörverstehenTeil 1
Sie hören fünf kurze Texte. Sind die Aussagen richtig oder falsch? Kreuzen Sie an.

This is Hören Teil 1, just like on exam day. You hear five short recordings, each one once, and for each you tick „Richtig“ or „Falsch“.
The method
-
1Read the sentence first
-
2Listen for what the recording is mainly about
-
3Tick
Richtig
orFalsch
Let's do Text 1 together
1Read the sentence first
Question 1
1 Eva geht heute mit Tom ins Kino.
Richtig / Falsch
The sentence is about what Eva does today: heute mit Tom ins Kino, ‘today to the cinema with Tom’. So you listen for what Eva says about that.
2Listen for what the recording is mainly about
What you heard
Hallo Tom, hier ist Eva. Ich wollte eigentlich heute mit dir ins Kino gehen. Aber ich bin krank und liege im Bett. Gehen wir nächste Woche?
Eva wanted to go, but she says aber ich bin krank
, ‘but I am ill’. Kino
, ‘cinema’, is only what she planned.
3Tick Richtig
or Falsch
1 Eva geht heute mit Tom ins Kino.
- R Richtig✕
- F Falsch✓
Eva is ill and stays in bed, so she does not go. You tick „Falsch“ for question 1.

A word you know from the sentence can come up in the recording and still not be the answer. Listen for what the speaker says about it.
Your turn: Text 2
2 Julius soll mit der Besprechung auf Franka warten.
Not quite. Play it again. What does Franka ask Julius to do with the meeting?
What you heard
Hallo Julius, hier ist Franka. Ich stehe im Stau und komme erst um halb zehn. Fang bitte schon ohne mich mit der Besprechung an.
The answer is Falsch
. You hear komme erst um halb zehn
, ‘I only come at half past nine’, so it sounds like Julius should wait. But Franka says schon ohne mich
, ‘already without me’. Julius starts the meeting without her.
The answer and the explanation are shown above.
Why a word you know can trick you
In Teil 1 the speaker often says the word from the sentence and then says something else about it. Here are three ways it happens.
-
The speaker says there is none
Wir haben morgen leider keinen Termin frei.
The wordTermin
is there, butkeinen
means ‘no’. The sentence “Frau Weber has an appointment tomorrow” is „Falsch“. -
The speaker cancels it
Ihre Fahrstunde morgen früh fällt leider aus
.Fällt aus
means ‘is cancelled’, so the lesson does not happen. -
It sounds bad, but it is fine
Es ist halb so schlimm
, ‘it is not so bad’. Nina went to the doctor, but she comes to dinner anyway.
So listen to what the speaker says about the word you know. Small words like leider
, ‘unfortunately’, and keinen
, ‘no’, tell you which way it goes.
