What the paper looks like

HörverstehenTeil 2

Sie hören ein Interview. Sind die Aussagen richtig oder falsch? Kreuzen Sie an.

This is Hören Teil 2, just like on exam day. You hear one interview two times, and for each sentence you tick „Richtig“ or „Falsch“.

The method

  1. 1Read all the questions first

  2. 2Tick the questions in order

  3. 3Check your ticks on the second listen

Let's do question 7 together

1Read all the questions first

Question 6, 7, 8

6  Herr Brandt hat vor einem Jahr eine Bäckerei eröffnet.

7  Herr Brandt findet das frühe Aufstehen schlecht.

8  Am Sonntag backt Herr Brandt nicht.

Question 7 is about frühe Aufstehen, ‘getting up early’. Read the other questions too, so you know what to listen for.

2Tick the questions in order

What you heard

Herr Brandt: Um drei Uhr. Zuerst dachte ich, das ist zu früh.

Aber jetzt gefällt es mir. Morgens ist es ruhig in der Stadt.

First Herr Brandt says das ist zu früh, ‘that is too early’. Then he says Aber jetzt gefällt es mir, ‘but now I like it’. You tick the last thing he says.

3Check your ticks on the second listen

7  Herr Brandt findet das frühe Aufstehen schlecht.

  • R Richtig✕
  • F Falsch✓

Herr Brandt likes getting up early now, so question 7 is not right. You tick „Falsch“, and on the second listen you check that you heard it right.

A speaker often says the first feeling and then changes it. Wait for the last thing they say about it.

Your turn: question 6

6  Frau Hoppe wollte von Anfang an vier Wochen reisen.

Not quite. Play it again. How many weeks did Frau Hoppe plan to travel?

What you heard

Moderator: Frau Hoppe, Sie sind im Sommer vier Wochen mit dem Fahrrad gereist. … Geplant waren eigentlich nur zwei Wochen.

The answer is Falsch. The host says vier Wochen, ‘four weeks’, so it sounds right. But Frau Hoppe says nur zwei Wochen, ‘only two weeks’. That was her plan, and the four weeks came later.

The answer and the explanation are shown above.

Why the first thing you hear can be wrong

In Teil 2 the speaker often tells you how it was and then how it is now. Here are three ways it happens.

  1. The speaker changes how she feels

Am Anfang war alles fremd und ich hatte Heimweh. Aber jetzt habe ich Freunde gefunden und fühle mich wohl. Heimweh means ‘homesick’, but Aber jetzt means ‘but now’. The sentence “Frau Yilmaz does not feel well now” is „Falsch“.

  2. The speaker says what he wanted, then what he wants now

Nein, ich wollte eigentlich Lehrer werden. That was the wish. Then he says Heute möchte ich nichts anderes mehr machen, ‘today I do not want to do anything else’. The sentence “Herr Schäfer would rather be a teacher today” is „Falsch“.

  3. The speaker names an old time first

Früher habe ich um 3 Uhr angefangen. Früher means ‘before’. The time that counts comes later: ich fange erst um 5 Uhr an. The sentence “Herr Kowalski starts at 5 o'clock today” is „Richtig“.

So listen to the end. The last thing the speaker says about a topic is the answer. Small words like früher, ‘before’, and jetzt, ‘now’, show you when it changes.
